Leeds Arts University
“Art is about life and it can’t really be about anything else.” This guiding principle reflects the ethos at Leeds Arts University, where we are committed to preparing our students for life beyond university, whether they aim to secure employment or start their own ventures. Our Careers, Employability, and Enterprise team offers tailored advice, guidance, events, and workshops to equip you with the necessary skills and confidence for your future career.
As you prepare for the professional world, Leeds Arts University is dedicated to maximizing your success. We ensure you build a robust CV by providing numerous opportunities to connect with the industry, develop practical skills, and gain invaluable experience. We also offer support for those interested in freelancing or self-employment, helping you to find the right job and advance your career post-graduation.
Beyond creative skills, we focus on developing a broad toolkit of transferable skills. These include teamwork, project management, problem-solving, self-motivation, time management, independent thought, and decision-making. Such skills are crucial for both freelancers and employees, enhancing your versatility and adaptability in the job market.
The creative industries present a promising future for our graduates. Recent government statistics highlight the sector’s rapid growth, with the creative sector expanding at twice the rate of the UK economy and accounting for 11.8% of all UK businesses. The industry supports over 2 million jobs and contributes £92 billion to the UK economy, with creative jobs being largely immune to automation. Additionally, freelancing is becoming more prevalent, with nearly one in seven UK workers being self-employed, and 47% of those in the creative industries are freelancers.
For students unsure of their career path or needing clarity on their goals, Leeds Arts University offers access to a resident careers consultant specializing in the creative sector. This service provides personalized advice and guidance to help you navigate your career choices and plan effectively for your future.
Post-graduation, our support doesn’t end. Alumni can benefit from our Creatives in Residence scheme or apply for residency in our funded studio spaces. Our Careers, Employability, and Enterprise team remains available for up to three years after graduation, offering various activities and guidance, including the Freelancer Summer School, alumni workshops, and one-on-one career guidance.
